The U.S. Mission to Nigeria comprises of the Embassy in Abuja, FCT, and the Consulate General in Lagos. U.S. Consulate General Lagos is the Mission’s representative to the Nigerian people in the southern region.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Duties

  • Under the supervisor of Information Management Specialist, or Information Program Officer, manages all unclassified pouch and diplomatic mail operations at the mailroom, supervising two mail Clerks who support all mailroom functions. Serves as primary local liaison with airport authorities, and mail handling contractors.
  • Sorts and distributes mail, processes incoming diplomatic pouches and prepares diplomatic pouches for dispatch. Responsible for transportation, safeguarding, receipt and delivery of all incoming and outgoing DPO mail and unclassified diplomatic pouches.
  • Maintains all required paperwork. Ensures all security standards are met for proper storage and handling of Diplomatic Post Office (DPO) accountable mail, Diplomatic Pouch (DPMUN) DPM registered, certified and pouch material. Provides guidance to all offices authorized to use DPO and pouch services.
  • Tracks and is accountable for all funds issued to the mail room.
  • Ensures all BPA contracts are kept up-to-date and tracks and updates the mailroom Franking machines required for official postage. 

Qualifications and Evaluations
Education Requirements:

  • Completion of Secondary School or high school diploma is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years in external or internal customer service where tasks included, problem-solving and mail handling or other related clerical experience, plus one year of supervisory or team lead experience are required.

Job Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge of standard officer practices is required. Knowledge of Department of State Diplomatic Post Office and Nigeria post-regulation and procedures; knowledge of local post office, airport, and train facilities, as well as, local couriers’ systems; good understanding of Mission’s organization, function, personnel, and practices of the agencies to which mail service is provided. Familiarity with Embassy physical layout and locations of individual personnel. Have a basic understanding of the Vienna Conventions and other international treaties diplomatic shipments.

Language:

  • Good working knowledge in reading, writing and speaking English is required.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to supervise and manage staff effectively is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, including ability to calmly handle customer complaints up to the Executive level is required.
  • Strong computer skills including typing skills and accurate data entry into web application with knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook). Must possess a valid Nigeria driver license.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, if required.
  • Must be able to lift 70 pounds and safely move up to 250 pounds with assistance from coworkers or use of mechanical devices

Agency Benefits:

  • Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Lagos, Nigeria may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.
  • For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.
  • The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

* Important

COVID-19 Requirements for Eligible Family Members

  • As required by Executive Order 14043, Eligible Family Members who will be employed on a Family Member Appointment (FMA) or a Temporary Appointment (TEMP) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee’s duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to such exceptions as required by law.   • Eligible Family Members who will be employed on a Personal Services Agreement and compensated under the USG pay plan will be required to attest to their vaccination status using the Vaccine Attestation Form.
