The West African Institute of Public Health (WAIPH) Health Literacy Leadership Programme 2021

The West African Institute of Public Health (WAIPH) is a non-state regional health development organisation (RHDO) for strengthening public health, enabling environment, improving public health systems and developing the professional capacity to ensure the performance of public health functions. To achieve its mission, the Institute is innovation-driven, working to support governments and partners to create dynamic, resilient, equitable, integrated, decentralized and participatory health systems within a just and empowered society in the spirit of universal access to health with primary health care as the cornerstone. The institute is also the custodian of the Regional Charter of Public Health, which is used to develop strategic approaches for public health functions and human capacity development in the West Africa Region.
The key pillars of the Institute’s interventions are advocacy, policy, research, education/ training, standards, competency, certifications and public health programme implementation.
Health Literacy Leadership Programme (HLLP) was designed by the Institute to improve health information, communication and promotion in order to to equip young people with advocacy and leadership skills to position them as change agents and advocates towards promoting health literacy and influencing policy makers in achieving a UHC.
Aims and Objectives
1. To strengthen population health literacy effort through increasing the critical numbers of young health literacy advocates through the Health Literacy Leadership Course (HLLC)
2. To equip young leaders with the capacity to filter and articulate strategic health information.
3. To develop the legislative advocacy capacity of the participants
4. To build a critical mass and network of young advocates and health literacy champions
5. To catalyse advocacy engagements on critical public health issues especially through new media.
Tasks
1. Participants are expected to be engaged in an intensive two-day virtual teaching.
2. For the period of 3 months, participants are expected to visit their immediate communities to make research on various health issues and challenges.
3. Submit reports of research and observations from their communities.
4. Publish at least one blog article month to advocate for key health issues and challenges in the society.
Eligibility
1. A master’s degree in any discipline and a minimum 2 years post graduation. Applicants should not be above 30 years at time of application.
2. Good command of English; the participants should possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
3. Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team.
4. Adept at using major social media platforms Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn and participate effectively in tweet chats, interviews, articles, campaigns and meetings.
Duration
HLLP is a 3 months leadership programme that includes; a two-day Course (HLLC) and a Leadership Project which requires participants to carry out monthly self-initiated projects. The projects will be in form of advocacy or campaign about a public health issue in their communities, as participants are expected to engage policymakers, especially legislators to bring the problem to their attention.
